Viaduct Museum Langwies

Opening 12 July 2025

111 YEARS OF THE LANGWIES VIADUCT: ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AND OPENING WEEKEND OF THE LANGWIES VIADUCT MUSEUM

Just in time for the 111th anniversary of the Langwies Viaduct, a new museum is opening in the village of Langwies. With the viaduct – the largest and longest-spanning reinforced concrete railway bridge in the world at the time of its construction – Langwies boasts an architectural landmark of international significance. Instead of a single museum building, several historically significant spaces near the train station will be converted for the Viaduct Museum. This creates a multifaceted museum with various stations, each of which illuminates the history of the Langwies Viaduct from different perspectives, making it a tangible experience for locals and visitors alike.

Waiting room

Train and time. In the waiting room of Langwies train station, you'll travel back to the beginnings of travel in the Schanfigg region, where technology and tourism were undergoing significant change, and the ski paradise of Arosa was connected to Amsterdam, Paris, Milan, and the like. Discover geographical lines where you least expect them and spin a timeline with a time machine effect. Where will it lead you? We'll just have to wait and see.

Ward office

Station and control. Who's taking over? The RhB, of course. In the stationmaster's office, the control panel is still in operation, and entry is therefore strictly prohibited. Explore the space, where history meets the present, through several windows in the waiting room and shed, and discover historical objects such as tickets, timetables, and photographs that tell you more about the daily work in the operation, the passengers, and the rolling stock.

Shed

Construction and concrete. The shed takes you behind the scenes. From sketches and construction plans for the Langwieser Viaduct to photographs from the construction of the Chur-Arosa line, portraits of the people behind the scenes, and impressive shots of the workers in action – roll up your sleeves, move walls mounted on rails, and gain an overview of the impressive background information on the construction of the Langwieser Viaduct and the Arosa Railway line.

Magazin

Magic and lines. Immerse yourself in memories of fire-catching anniversaries, a special car with a goosebump effect, or monstrous snow clearing operations, and be enchanted by the art, literature, and stories surrounding the Langwieser Viaduct. While the cinema room transports you to earlier decades with original film footage, an animation station offers opportunities for interaction.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee accessibility in the first few seasons because the museum will be using existing Rhaetian Railway facilities. However, Langwies station is scheduled to be extensively remodeled to make it more accessible in the coming years.
Currently, the following is the situation: Stations 1, Rectifier (facade painting), and 2, Waiting Room, are accessible. Station 3, Shed, has a set of stairs. Station 4, Materials Depot, is accessible via a flat (unpaved) path, which may be covered with small pieces of wood waste from the adjacent Rhaetian Railway timber loading facility. Station 5, Pillar, can be reached via the regular hiking trail (unpaved) in about 2 minutes. The entrance here also has a set of stairs.
The following materials are available for pickup at the museum's information desk: hearing protection for children (Peltor), hearing protection for adults (Peltor), disposable foam earplugs (3M), a brochure with enlarged exhibition text, a magnifying glass, a magnifying mat with 3x magnification, and fidget toys. The information desk is open from 10:00 AM to 1:15 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

The exhibition texts will also be available in English, French, and Italian at a later date. We apologize for the inconvenience. This information will not be available at the time of the museum's opening.

Please note that entering the Langwies Viaduct is strictly prohibited. The Viaduct Museum operates on premises along the Langwies station. Trains sometimes run irregularly; staying on the tracks and in the immediate vicinity is strictly prohibited. The Rhaetian Railway's safety instructions apply. When timber is being loaded onto the siding, the route to Station 4 (Material Depot) and Station 5 (Pillar) will be diverted (a 10-15 minute walk, partially unpaved, with uphill and downhill sections). Staying in the station area is at your own risk. The Langwies Viaduct Museum accepts no liability.
