Gspan since 1621
The history of Gspan begins in 1621, when two Walser houses with stables were built on the hill opposite the Bergkirchli church. The hill was given the field name Gspanhügel. The name is derived from the dialect word ‘Gspändli’ (henchmen).

As early as 1914, the Gspan was a meeting place for music and dancing for the youth of Arosa.
It is remodelled for the first time in 1935.
Johann Ulrich Schmid from the Gspan, the grandfather of the current Gspaners, had a large haulage business and was the first person in Arosa to run a taxi. He met his wife Mia Naef on a carriage ride. A native of Zollikon, she spends the summer in Arosa as a governess for the Bally family of shoe manufacturers.
In 1947, the former cowshed becomes a cosy café. The legendary ‘Gspan-Nani’, Mia Schmid Naef, took the business under her wing and drove it forward with diligence and courage.
Demand increases steadily and there is soon a shortage of guest rooms. So in 1953, the roof is raised by night and fog. Four new guest rooms are created. The restaurant is also extended by integrating the former kitchen and the veranda, which resembles a railway carriage.
In the early 1970s, daughter Ursula and her husband Bruno Gull joined the business. The Gspan is remodelled and extended. There are new guest rooms and the restaurant is modernised and equipped with the ‘Zigüner’ tables. They are still our tavola pubblica today, where anyone and everyone who likes to socialise can meet.

In the parlour, the architect at the time, Turi Bächtold, covered the walls with jute sacks with great sayings on them.

1981 All rooms are equipped with shower/WC. The former stable wall comes to light. Today it adorns the graffiti room.

At the beginning of the 1980s, Ursula Oechslin and her second husband Rolf have the idea of offering fine meals in a cosy atmosphere in the evening. This met with little understanding from the après-ski guests. As a result, the beautifully laid tables are sometimes pulled out in protest! This is why the legendary Öxli bar is built in 1986. It is still the bar with the best view of the Bergkirchli and the village.

Until 2020, the Gspänli, a former stable that stood on the Tschuggen, was part of the business. In the 1970s, Bruno Gull and players from EHC Arosa set it up on a new foundation opposite the Gspan. At first, it was mainly used as a club pub. At the beginning of the 1980s, the Gspänli is furnished so that guests can also be catered for. For the first few years, it was mainly used for après-ski. Gradually, however, the Gspänli became an insider tip and a popular meeting place for lovers of fine meat from the charcoal grill and cosy get-togethers.

Daughter Caroline has been working at the Gspan since 1993. Initially working in service, she gradually took on administrative tasks. Her husband Dirk Geng has been part of the team since 1997. He works in the kitchen and service for a few seasons. Dirk became head chef in 2000, refining and perfecting the Gspan cuisine. The ‘boys’ Caroline & Dirk Geng-Gull have been running the Gspan since 2010. Rolf Oechslin is still at their side for tips, the fine salad dressing and the famous Gspan herb butter. In 2020, Dirk Geng was inducted into the Guild of Established Chefs.

We are still constantly renovating and remodelling. The last major remodelling was four years ago. The Graffito, Rothorn and Mittagslugga rooms were renovated and the bathrooms completely remodelled.

The story of the Gspan continues.

So, dear guests and friends: see you soon on the Gspanhügel! We are really looking forward to it
