IGSU Clean-Up Days in Arosa Lenzerheide
As temperatures fall, littering usually also decreases. Not so in the mountain regions: They are particularly popular with hikers and bikers in autumn. Cigarette butts, food and drink packages still end up on paths, between rocks and under bushes. This is why the teams of ambassadors of the IG saubere Umwelt (IGSU) are again touring the Grisons as part of their national awareness campaign and motivating passers-by to dispose of their waste correctly.
In the mountains, littering is an issue all year round. In the warm season, hikers and bikers enjoy the mountain air and in the cold season we welcome winter sports enthusiasts. Thanks to the implementation of various measures and the sensitisation of mountain guests, we have been able to observe a slight decrease in litter in recent years. Thanks also to the regular support of the IGSU ambassadors, more and more mountain climbers are aware of what discarded waste can do to nature.
To draw attention to the litter problem, the IGSU ambassador teams will be back in Arosa Lenzerheide in October 2020 to talk to passers-by about littering and recycling.
The IGSU ambassadors can be found at the following locations:
- 8 October 2019: Arosa (Arosa-Weisshorn aerial cableway, Arosa Bärenland, Tschuggenhütte, Obersee, post office)
- 10 October 2019: Lenzerheide (Rothorn valley station, Scharmoin middle station, Heidsee shore area, Lenzerheide village)
About the IGSU
Since 2007, the IGSU ambassador teams have been travelling through more than 50 Swiss towns and municipalities every year, talking to passers-by about littering and recycling. In addition, workshops and break activities are held to sensitise schoolchildren to the problem of littering. As a competence centre against littering, the IGSU does not limit itself to ambassadorial missions. Supported by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN, the Swiss Association for Municipal Infrastructure SVKI and the Pusch Foundation, the IGSU organises the national Clean-Up Day, which this year took place on 11 and 12 September. In addition, the IGSU awards the No-Littering Label to cities, municipalities and schools that are active against littering, and supports institutions in the implementation of spatial sponsorship projects.
