Lenzerheide at the Swiss Epic
Since yesterday, Tuesday 17 August 2021, around 400 teams have been on the road at the Swiss Epic in Graubünden. The «Lenzerheide - Pump for Peace» team, consisting of former professional downhiller Claudio Caluori and Faranak Partoazar, the Iranian cross-country champion, is also taking part. With their participation, the two are pursuing the goal of raising money for the global «Pump for Peace» initiative and thus supporting the construction of pump tracks in disadvantaged regions.
347 kilometres and almost 12,000 metres of altitude: This is what awaits the 400 or so teams at the third edition of the Swiss Epic in Graubünden. The five stages lead from St. Moritz via Valposchiavo to Davos. The Swiss Epic is part of the global Epic Series: 15 teams can look forward to starting places at the Absa Cape Epic in South Africa. So mastering this Swiss Epic is no easy task. The "Lenzerheide - Pump for Peace" team is trying anyway, and not least for a good cause. Thanks to the partnership of the Epic Series with «GivenGain», it is possible to raise money for different charities. The "Lenzerheide - Pump for Peace" team is doing this, as the name suggests, for the global "Pump for Peace" initiative. This focuses on the construction of pump tracks in disadvantaged regions. The team consists of the former professional downhiller and "Pump for Peace" initiator Claudio Caluori and the Iranian Faranak Partoazar. The 32-year-old won the Iranian championship five times, took first place in the cross-country discipline in 2017 with 321 points and is the first Iranian woman to win a medal at the Asian Games.
Strong personality in the fight for women in Iran
Faranak Partoazar's social commitment is no coincidence: In her home country, she actively fights for women, their rights and prestige in her own country. In the Iranian mountain bike scene, she is considered a pioneer and idol for many young female athletes and those who want to become one. Faranak Partoazar was also the protagonist in the documentary film «Free Riding Iran» by the two Swiss enduro pros Anita and Carolin Gehrig, in which she reports on the challenges of being a female biker in her country.
