IBU Youth and Junior World Championships
23 January to 2 February 2020
During the IBU Youth & Junior World Championships Biathlon about 500 athletes and 300 coaches from 43 nations competed. A big thank you goes to the 350 volunteers who made a major contribution to the success of this event in Lenzerheide.
Strong performance by the Swiss athletes
After just four days of competition, Switzerland was able to claim one gold and two bronze medals. It was Lea Meier from the Grisons who won gold on the first day in the individual competition youth female over 10 kilometres. The second day continued with the two bronze medals of Sebastian Stalder and Amy Baserga in the individual competition of the juniors over 15 and 12.5 kilometres. The performance of the young athletes is remarkable. Niklas Hartweg and Amy Baserga for example were the youngest in the junior category and finished among the top 10.
Over all expectations
Nobody expected that: While the organizers spoke of the "high goal" of 5,000 spectators over the entire week before the event, in the end it was 7,000 spectators who watched the competitions on the track or from the grandstand.
World Cup test passed
The IBU Youth & Junior World Championships Biathlon 2020 were a milestone on the way to the first Biathlon World Cup in Switzerland. Nevertheless: Lenzerheide's competitive environment consists of 24 potential World Cup venues worldwide. An acceptance as well as a cancellation for Lenzerheide is realistic. The decision is eagerly awaited.
