Snow-making system in Lenzerheide
The Lenzerheide holiday region is already opening the cross-country and biathlon season at the end of October. Thanks to the investment in the snowfactory snowmaking system, which allows snowmaking even in warmer temperatures.
The so-called «Snowfactory» allows, in contrast to classic snowmakers, a production even at plus degrees. The principle of the Snowfactory is simple: with an advanced cooling technology, the water in a heat exchanger is cooled to freezing point. The water thus freezes due to the generated cold, without chemical additives. It does not produce snow in the true sense, but small dry ice sheets. By the subsequent machine track preparation the quality of firn snow is achieved. The system is thus ideal for smaller sections, but not for the area-wide snowmaking of entire ski resorts.
From the end of September, the facility will be in continuous operation for around six to eight weeks if possible. The trails will be prepared at the end of October so that a 1.5-kilometre-long cross-country trail will be available on 7 November 2020. Afterwards, the trail will be extended as soon as possible. The snow guarantee should not only extend the season, but also be a guarantee for the organization of international events. The project is financed by the municipalities of Vaz/Obervaz and Lantsch/Lenz, the Lenzerheide cross-country skiing region and the Biathlon Arena Lenzerheide.
